Homocysteine is a byproduct of amino acid metabolism (or the synthesis of methionine and cysteine). The deficit of vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid can lead to high homocysteine levels in blood plasma. Folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 contribute to normal homocysteine metabolism.
